Access Information

Whilst at Bowhill we welcome all visitors, the historic buildings and nature of the country estate can affect access for some.

Bowhill House
There is wheelchair access to all public rooms on the guided tour except one – the Monmouth Room which has 4 steps of narrow depth up to it with no handrail.

Two wheelchairs are available – visitors can request these at the time of booking the tour in the gift shop or in advance by telephone (01750 22204).

Suggestions are always welcome about how we can improve our facilities.

Courtyard Attractions
All attractions in the courtyard – Gift Shop and James Hogg Exhibition, Visitor Centre, Victorian Kitchen and Minstrel Tearoom are accessible.  Tables and chairs are not permanently fixed.

Toilets – the male and disabled toilets are accessible by wheelchair.  Unfortunately, baby-changing facilities are not accessible by wheelchair.

Adventure Playground
Spider swing specifically designed for disabled users.  Other equipment may be accessible depending on individual abilities.

Floor covering is rough wood chippings.

Walks/access to grounds
The main Estate roads and courtyard area uses a tarmac surface.

The Garden in front of Bowhill House can be accessed by wheelchair users but has a gravelled ground surface which some may find difficult.

The series of walks around the Estate have in places muddy areas, steep paths, uneven road surfaces and steps in places.   However, the most accessible of these walks is the Lochs Walk, which is partially on tarmac and may be suitable for a motorised wheelchair.  Please note there is a short but steep hill on the return of the walk.

Visitors who are blind or partially sighted
Guided Tours of House
Large print tour of Bowhill available.

Access for Deaf people and those with hearing loss
There is an induction loop in Bowhill theatre.  Unfortunately, at present there is not one on the tour of Bowhill house.

Dogs
Bowhill is a great place to bring your dog for a walk, just as long as you clean up after your dog.  Please keep your dog on a short lead.
