Green Policy

The Green Tourisn Business Scheme "Gold"

At the Buccleuch Heritage Trust (BHT), we are committed to working in a sustainable way. Formed in 1984, the Trust administers the educational and public access to Bowhill House and Country Estate. It aims to build bridges in the understanding between town and country and represents a continuity of the Buccleuch commitment to conserve the British countryside. The Trust seeks to further this aim by promoting greater awareness of the countryside’s vital place in the Nation’s heritage and provide access and information for a public that is rightly becoming ever more aware of Environmental issues.

In particular, we are committed to

• Complying with and where possible exceeding the requirements
of environmental legislation and approved codes of practice.
• Supporting local businesses and the local community.
• Stocking sustainable, local and fairtrade goods.
• Reducing our waste, use of energy, water and other resources.
• Raising awareness of ‘green’ issues with both our employees and visitors.
• Continuing the study of wildlife and conservation.

Responsible Visitor Charter

Please help us to be a more environmentally friendly business by following these simple guidelines

  • Respect nature – help us to look after the landscape and wildlife by not littering, guarding against fire and using footpaths and cycle-ways responsibly
  • Reduce, Reuse & Recycle – please use the recycling facilities that we provide.  You can find bins to separate your rubbish in the car park, courtyard and the adventure playground
  • Shop local – why not buy something from our gift shop, it is full of ideal gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas.  With a selection of local crafts, fair trade and recycled produce.
  • Share transport – if you are meeting your friends or family at Bowhill, try to share transport rather than each bringing a car
  • Carbon offsetting – You’ve all heard of your carbon footprint, why not do something to offset this by coming on one of our tree planting activities.  Speak to one of the rangers for more information
  • Support Green Tourism Businesses – there are hundreds of businesses trying to reduce their environmental impacts through the Green Tourism Business Scheme.  Businesses are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold for their efforts to be more environmentally responsible.

Fact of the Week

Fact of the Week
Between 1831 and 1832 it was decided to move the main entrance to Bowhill from the south side to the north side. This alteration meant moving the staircase from the central axis of the house to the west, enlarging the Gallery Hall and extending the drawing room to take in the entrance hall and porch of the replaced south entrance
