On the high heather moors keep your eyes peeled to see short-eared owls out hunting or mountain hares bounding across their territories. During the summer the air is filled with the haunting calls of curlew and the ceaseless melodies of the skylark alongside many other songbirds.
A walk along the Yarrow water will allow you the chance to spot grey heron, grey wagtails and dippers bobbing up and down on prominent rocks. Any of the waterways might also yield a glimpse of kingfishers and otters foraging for food. For variety you don’t have to go far with the mixed woodland and lochs around the house containing many different birds such as wintering goldeneye, coal tits, nutchatch and crossbill.
Buccleuch Ranger Service at Bowhill runs many educational events throughout the year, many of which have a particular wildlife theme. For more information please check our events page, contact us or speak to one of our rangers during your visit.
