| Victorian BowhillAlthough Bowhill is in many ways a splendid example of Georgian architecture, its development is largely associated with Walter Francis, the great Victorian Duke who first brought his bride, Charlotte Anne, from Longleat to Bowhill on their marriage in 1829. The house and grounds were remodelled to make a comfortable Victorian home for them and their family and this is evident today. Walter Francis was a hugely influential Duke in the Borders, across Scotland and further afield, and in all his dealings managed to combine the best of the past with the innovative thinking which has characterised his descendants ever since.
